Nissan Cancels Electric Vehicle Production in Mississippi

Nissan has confirmed to its suppliers that it has canceled its plans to produce electric vehicles—for both its main brand and Infiniti—at its plant in Canton, Mississippi, according to a report by AutoNews.

The decision was expected after executives from the Japanese automaker revealed weeks ago that they were developing a new platform to produce a new family of vehicles at that manufacturing facility, including the new Xterra.

In 2021, the company announced a $500 million investment to transform the plant—which currently produces the Frontier pickup and the Altima sedan—into an electric vehicle hub.

However, under the new strategy, Nissan will now convert the 4.7-million-square-foot complex into the nerve center of a new offensive featuring at least five products focused on the lucrative midsize SUV segment.

It is known that in addition to the Xterra, the company also plans to launch an alternative version of the Pathfinder and the next generation of the Frontier, developed on a new body-on-frame architecture in which all models share about 70% of their components.
