Ferro Corp., an international chemical company based in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, has announced plans to move some of its U.S. operations to Mexico.

The company’s manufacturing plant in Canton Township, Pennsylvania will be closed soon, while the Cleveland site will discontinue porcelain enamel production. These operations will be moved to a more modern facility in Villagran, Guanajuato, the company said in a press statement.

The Mexico transition will start in the first quarter of the year and continue through late 2019, or possibly into early 2020. The company provides functional coatings and color solutions.

"The high cost of production impacts sales, profitability and market share and is not sustainable. Villagran offers a modern, comprehensive, efficient facility for a more sustainable future,” says the company’s statement.

The Washington County facility was built in 1869, while the one in Cleveland started operations in 1919. The company said these facilities are costly to maintain and are not sustainable despite investments made over the years.

The company will cut 160 jobs in Washington County and 80 positions in Ohio. Ferro Corp. said it offered elsewhere or work-at-home opportunities for a third of those employees.
