Olinia Carga: Mexico’s new electric cargo vehicle.
Alinia Carga is the name of the electric microvehicle developed in Mexico for transporting goods. It will have a load capacity of up to 650 kg, a range of over 120 kg, and an estimated price of approximately US$8,842.
The vehicle is part of the Olinia platform, which also includes the Olinia 1 passenger model and the Olinia Van. This project aims to promote mini-electric mobility in Mexico through vehicles adapted to the characteristics of the domestic market.
Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has emphasized that this development brings together engineering expertise from various public institutions, such as the National Technological Institute of Mexico, the National Polytechnic Institute, and the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
The call for bids for Olinia's industrial production will be conducted in coordination with Nacional Financiera (Nafin) and will allow both public and private companies to participate. According to the Secretary of Science, Humanities, Technology, and Innovation, the project aims to establish a company with a majority of Mexican capital and the capacity to manufacture these vehicles domestically.
Olinia’s CEO, Roberto Capuano Tripp, explained that the business process will begin in late September, with registrations taking place in October, while formal offers will be received in November, and the round will close in December of this year. “Olinia proves that technological products can be developed in Mexico,” the CEO said.
The Olinia Carga is designed to carry two people and will be equipped with a low cargo bed for goods that can be plugged into any standard outlet. According to Capuano Tripp, the operating cost will be four times lower than that of a light-duty cargo vehicle and will amount to one-third of the operating cost of a motorized tricycle, with features tailored to markets related to small businesses, delivery, and urban goods transport.
The project has already secured orders for 8,000 of the 10,000 units expected to be manufactured in the first year of production. The goal is to increase capacity to 50,000 vehicles per year, creating an opportunity to integrate industrial capabilities, suppliers, and jobs within the new electromobility supply chain being developed in Mexico.
Olinia Carga is a project that also includes the development of the Olinia Van, a closed-body vehicle with a secure rear cargo area. Meanwhile, Nacional Financiera is planning support programs for micro and small businesses, while the strategy aims to link Mexican technological development with industrial manufacturing and job creation.
