Toyota vehicle production in Mexico hikes 32% during 2018, official data shows

In 2018, Toyota built 1,935,230 vehicles at its North American vehicle assembly plants. Since 1986, Toyota’s total vehicle production in North America has reached more than 38 million, said the company in a statement.
According to data released by the Japanese automaker, production volume in Mexico increased 32% from 148,642 units in 2017 to 196,261 vehicles in 2018.
This hike was led by the Tijuana plant (Toyota Motor Manufacturing de Baja California), in which US$ 150 million were invested to increase its capacity.
This expansion resulted in an output boost of Tacoma pickups from 104,622 units in 2017 to 156,335 light trucks in 2018, which represents a 49.4% hike.
Meanwhile, at the Mazda plant in Salamanca, Guanajuato, where the Yaris sedan is produced, 39,926 units were manufactured in 2018, which resulted in a decrease of 9.3% compared to the 44,020 vehicles manufactured in 2017.
On the other hand, Toyota auto plants in the U.S. saw their production volume decline by 1.73% from 1,263,546 vehicles in 2018 to 1,241,615 units in 2018.
Toyota's operations in Canada saw a much bigger decline, from 571,535 units in 2017 to 497,354 vehicles in 2018, which resulted in a 13% drop.
Toyota produces 13 models in North America including: Avalon, Camry, Corolla, Highlander, RAV4, Sequoia, Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, Lexus RX 350, Lexus ES 350 and Yaris sedan. Toyota directly employs more than 47,000 people.
