Volkswagen Confirms Tiguan Production Through 2035

Volkswagen Group executives confirmed during the latest investor conference that production of the compact SUV Tiguan will continue through 2035, during which time two major updates will be carried out.

This was announced by Daniela Cavallo, chairwoman of the German automotive giant’s board of directors, during the annual meeting in Wolfsburg, where she specified that the updates will take place in 2028 and 2031.

Although the executive referred to the version for the European market—which was subsequently replaced by the larger Tayron in October 2024—the latter in turn served as the basis for the Tiguan intended for North America, albeit without the third-row seating option or the hybrid powertrain.

The trade press speculates that the first update will likely modernize the interior technologies, bringing them in line with those of the latest Volkswagen models. A greater emphasis on physical control buttons is expected, combined with more sophisticated software.

Judging by the brand’s latest updates, exterior changes could be fairly subtle: refreshed bumpers, LED lighting, and various new body colors and wheel designs.

The second update will bring more noticeable design changes to keep the Tiguan at the forefront of the competitive compact SUV segment and in line with the evolution of the Volkswagen brand’s styling.

It is estimated that the engine lineup will be revised to meet increasingly strict European emissions standards, which will require greater electrification.

While current Tiguan production takes place in Wolfsburg and Puebla for the European and North American markets, respectively, the company has not confirmed long-term plans for either model. However, given the need to optimize costs, the situation is expected to remain unchanged.
