Government plans to invest in environment projects

The Mexican government plans to reforest 32,764 hectares with 15.5 million trees by the end of 2026, according to the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT).
During a reforestation event in Tepelmeme Villa de Morelos, in the Chocho-Mixteca region of Oaxaca, the agency’s head, Alicia Barcena Ibarra, noted that the goal is to restore more than 1,500 additional hectares, in coordination with the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) and the Sembrando Vida program.
In Oaxaca, 83 projects are underway across 6,825 hectares, with an investment of US$14 million; of these, 78 projects are in the Chocho-Mixteca region, representing an additional investment of US$14 million.
These events are part of the actions outlined in SEMARNAT’s National Environmental Restoration Program 2026.
This year also includes plans to carry out projects to strengthen forest restoration, soil conservation, and water harvesting, including 763 kilometers of fencing, 307 kilometers of firebreaks, 1,090 kilometers of mechanized land clearing, 160 kilometers of trench ditches, the construction of 643,000 individual terraces, the rehabilitation of 4,128 cubic meters of storage ponds or embankments, the installation of 3,378 cubic meters of gabion, log, masonry, or stone dams, the implementation of 270 biodiversity conservation actions, and the reforestation of 11,250 hectares with 4.6 million plants.
