Jalisco expects to increase electricity demand to 4,000 MW by 2030
Electricity demand in Jalisco has risen again due to increased industrial activity and the influx of new investments into the state, according to Manuel Herrera Vega, head of the Secretariat for Sustainable Energy Development (SEDES), in an interview with El Economista.
It was predicted that the agency would have raised its estimate to 4,000 MW for the year 2030, although earlier this year, the projection was 3,475 MW. The head of SEDES clarified that the agency worked in collaboration with the Association of Industrial Parks of the State of Jalisco (APIEJ) to update the state’s energy needs and incorporate them into federal planning.
The new estimate also confirms the 1,700 MW initially projected by the Electricity Sector Development Plan (PLADESE) for Jalisco by 2030.
According to Herrera Vega, the update allows the federal authority to incorporate the state’s new electricity needs into the binding plan.
The head of SEDES assures that Jalisco’s industrial parks and new investments are guaranteed the energy supply needed to operate, while planning for infrastructure and new power generation projects moves forward. Under these conditions, it has been noted that there is a significant portfolio of renewable energy projects, following the participation of several companies and funds in the calls for proposals launched by the secretariat.
It was also noted that, at present, the National Energy Control Center (CENACE) and the Ministry of Energy are working to determine the reinforcement work needed to complete the projects.
The agreement between SEDES and APIEJ has led to the creation of a council that will identify and conduct studies related to the energy needs of industrial parks, including one on natural gas supply and self-consumption. Similarly, the agreement highlights the new legislation that allows industrial parks to develop private microgrids and self-consumption projects to meet their own needs and those of the companies located within them.
