First 50,000 BMW iX3s Meet Only Half the Demand

Just nine months after the start of series production, the 50,000th BMW iX3 rolled off the assembly line at the Debrecen plant in Hungary, marking the first milestone for the new generation of electric vehicles known as the Neue Klasse.

The Bavarian automaker explained that the rapid increase in production accelerated significantly with the introduction of a second shift, which began in February 2026—well ahead of schedule.

“The 50,000th BMW iX3 underscores the capabilities of our plant in Debrecen: we’ve never produced so many vehicles so quickly at a new plant. This milestone is the result of an outstanding team effort,” said Raymond Wittmann, a member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production.

The company explained that bringing the schedule forward was necessary to meet the high demand the BMW iX3 has experienced since sales began, thanks to which the premium brand is on track to soon reach 100,000 orders.

New Model, New Architecture, New Plant

As the first series-production vehicle in the Neue Klasse, the BMW iX3 also marks the beginning of a new vehicle architecture—at a plant built entirely from the ground up.

The plant thus plays a key role in the scaling and rollout of the Neue Klasse across the BMW Group’s production network.

“The production of the 50,000th BMW iX3 reflects the dedication and expertise of our team. As the home of the first mass-produced Neue Klasse model, the Debrecen plant is helping to shape the future of the BMW Group’s global production network,” said Hans-Peter Kemser, President and CEO of BMW Group Plant Debrecen.

The pioneering experiences gained from the launch of the first Neue Klasse model provide the Debrecen plant and other BMW Group plants around the world with valuable insights for upcoming launches.

Just a week ago, BMW reiterated that plans for the San Luis Potosí plant remain firm; the plant will begin producing both batteries and electric vehicles from the Neue Klasse lineup—specifically the iX3 SUV and the i3 sedan—starting in 2027.

At an event commemorating the 10th anniversary of the start of construction on the manufacturing complex, company executives confirmed that the strategic role of this facility remains unchanged, but declined to provide specific dates.

“Each of our plants benefits from the launch experience we’ve gained at the Debrecen plant. By the end of 2027, we will launch 40 new or updated models. Efficiency, speed, and quality are crucial to the successful launch of all vehicles. The transfer of knowledge among our production sites worldwide is a key factor,” said Wittmann.

To achieve this, the BMW Group is committed to close collaboration among its production sites. The expertise gained at one plant flows directly into the global network and supports the launch of other models.

This makes it possible to detect and prevent potential quality deviations—for example, at an early stage—before they can recur at another location. Digital tools and a shared database form the foundation for this.

The BMW iX3 is the first series-production vehicle in the Neue Klasse and a key starting point for the BMW Group’s next generation of models.

By the end of 2027, the BMW Group plans to launch 40 new or updated models that will incorporate the technologies and design language of the Neue Klasse.

The insights gained from the launch of the BMW iX3, along with digital data, quality analyses, and process improvements, will support future vehicle launches at other locations.
