Guanajuato and ASU partner to boost semiconductor industry

The Guanajuato state government, led by Governor Libia Dennise García Muñoz Ledo, has established a partnership with Arizona State University (ASU), one of the leading institutions in the United States for technological innovation.

This partnership represents a strategic step toward diversifying the state's industrial base beyond traditional manufacturing and strengthening its capabilities in areas such as microelectronics, integrated circuit design, engineering, materials, and advanced technologies—sectors that are essential to North America's industrial competitiveness.

As part of this initiative, from October 28 to 30, the Governor welcomed a delegation from Arizona State University led by James O’Brien, senior vice president for University Affairs and chief of staff to the university's president.

During the visit, the state government and ASU signed a joint agreement establishing the framework for collaborative projects in semiconductors, advanced manufacturing, the automotive industry, and mobility. The agreement also seeks to strengthen supply chains, identify technological capabilities and talent, and promote exchanges, training programs, and dialogue among academic institutions, businesses, and government agencies.

This collaboration is particularly strategic because Guanajuato is not starting from scratch. The state already has institutions, projects, and infrastructure that provide a foundation for developing knowledge, research, and talent across various segments of the semiconductor value chain.

Alongside this partnership, the state is also advancing a project to build a clean room at the facilities of the State Institute for Training (IECA), with technical support from the Center for Optical Research (CIO). The initiative aims to strengthen Guanajuato's technological infrastructure and expand its specialized training capabilities.

These efforts will help the state improve coordination among educational institutions, research centers, and specialized infrastructure, aligning scientific research and talent development with the technological needs of industry.
