Slim Family Invests US$150 million in Talos Debt
U.S. oil company Talos Energy announced the participation of entities linked to businessman Carlos Slim’s family in a recent debt offering aimed at refinancing the company’s existing obligations.
Companies and individuals affiliated with Control Empresarial de Capitales (CEC), the Slim family’s so-called “family office,” acquired a total of US$150 million from the offering, which raised US$800 million, Talos said in its quarterly report.
The bond issue, launched in July, carries an 8% coupon rate and matures in 2034, with semiannual interest payments beginning in January 2027.
The proceeds allowed Talos to repay debt carrying a 9% interest rate that was scheduled to mature in 2029.
“As a result, our long-term cash needs and contractual obligations, as detailed in our 2025 Annual Report, have been modified by extending the maturity of the refinanced debt from February 2029 to July 2034,” Talos said in its quarterly report.
According to the company, Talos paid Inbursa—a financial institution managed by the Slim family—US$900,000 in consulting fees under the terms of the offering.
Talos’ refinancing comes amid a series of acquisitions, including the purchase of Shell’s assets in the U.S. portion of the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the pending acquisition of a 50% interest in Block 29, located in deepwater areas of the Gulf of Mexico.
The company also decided to acquire an 80% interest in an offshore project in Honduras. The debt investment followed a reduction in the Slim family’s equity stake in Talos.
In mid-October, the Houston-based oil company said the Slim family held approximately 17.8% of its outstanding shares, down from the 23.4% stake reported in September.
Talos Energy and Control Empresarial de Capitales are currently bound by an agreement that limits the Slim family’s equity stake in the company to a maximum of 25%. Agreement that expires in December.
The agreement, initially established in 2024, followed Grupo Carso—a conglomerate controlled by the Slim family—acquiring an additional 30% stake in Talos Energy México, a transaction completed in March of this year.
