The last pieces of the puzzle that will shape the BMW plant in San Luis Potosi, central Mexico, have begun to take their place, hence the facility of the German group has given much to talk about these days.
In the first place, local media announced that the factory will have an output capacity not of 150,000 but 175,000 vehicles per year, while the workforce will increase from 1,500 to 2,000 strong, so that on October 13 there will be a job fair at the Alfonso Lastras stadium in the state capital, in order to fill the remaining vacancies, according to the report by Pulso Diario de San Luis, which cites Human Resources director of the plant, Lourdes Quijas, as a source.
Earlier this week, the director of Government Affairs, Carlos Gutierrez, said that in just a few days the construction, which is currently 98% completed, will be finished. “Construction work is about to conclude. We are also in the final stage of equipment installation, as well as recruitment of personnel,” said the official in a press conference.
On the other hand, business leaders who jointly worked with the government of San Luis Potosi to win the installation of the plant, announced that they’ve already paid 90% of the loan contracted to acquire and provide infrastructure to the 300-hectare land that was granted to the company.
Local businessman Luis Gerardo Ortuno Diaz said that the 750 million pesos (about US$ 39.5 million) have been recovered through taxes on investments triggered by the arrival of the German automaker.
Finally, Austrian media reported that the BMW plant located in the city of Steyr has already started sending the first engines that will be mounted in the 3 Series sedans that will roll out of the Mexican plant.
According to a report by the Nachrichten.at website, on July 20 the facility carried out the first delivery test by shipping a batch of 46 four-cylinder units, which arrived at their destination 35 days later. The report adds that by the end of the year a new shipment will be made, this time of 121 diesel and gasoline engines, of four and six cylinders, that will cover the same route of almost 10,000 kilometers.
