German Tier 1 automotive supplier Continental AG yesterday unveiled plans to build a manufacturing plant in Aguascalientes, central Mexico, dedicated to production of electronic components. The company will invest around US$ 60 million to build and set up the proper equipment, while 1,000 job positions will be opened over a five-year time frame.

Construction work will begin in early 2019 followed by the installation of equipment in the second half of the year. It is expected that the first production tests will begin at the end of the year aiming to formally start operations in 2020. The 258,000-square-foot facility will be located at the Finsa industrial park.

The plant will manufacture electronic control units (ECU), door control units (DCU), lighting control boards and smart antenna modules for automakers such as General Motors, Ford and Nissan.

It will be Continental’s sixth plant of its kind in North America and 30th worldwide, but also the company’s 25th location in the country, including manufacturing plants, research and development centers, as well as sales and financial offices. The company currently employs more than 25,000 workers in Mexico.

At a ceremony to unveil the project, Governor Martin Orozco Sandoval thanked his collaborators for successfully carrying out the negotiations for more than a year directly at the company's headquarters in Hanover, Germany, to attract this investment to the state of Aguascalientes.
