General Motors ends imports from Asia

General Motors, Mexico, and the automotive industry announced a new domestic assembly project that will enable local production of the Chevrolet Groove and Chevrolet Aveo models starting in 2027.
Francisco Garza, president and CEO of General Motors Mexico, emphasized that the company’s presence in Mexico has supported the country’s industrial transformation and the consolidation of manufacturing regions linked to the automotive sector.
In Toluca, the company operates a regional engineering center where more than 700 engineers develop and validate components for international markets; it also maintains a network of over 650 domestic suppliers, with annual purchases exceeding US$28 billion
The company announced that starting in 2027, it will begin local assembly of vehicles for the Mexican market, with the goal of reaching an annual capacity of approximately 80,000 vehicles by 2030. The project will begin with the assembly of the Chevrolet Groove and will later incorporate the Chevrolet Aveo, currently one of the best-selling vehicles in the country.
In addition to its manufacturing expansion, the company highlighted its social responsibility strategy focused on education, environmental sustainability, and community support. Notable initiatives include robotics and technical training programs for youth, participation in “Jovenes Construyendo el Futuro,” and the Cheyenne Brigade—an initiative that has traveled more than 478,000 miles providing support to communities across the country.
