General Motors is recalling more than 240,000 Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC vehicles over an issue with the brake system that could increase the risk of a crash, although GM says it's not aware of any incident so far.

The recall covers the GMC Terrain, Buick Lacrosse and Regal, Cadillac XTS and Chevrolet Cruze, Equinox, Volt, Impala and Bolt EV from 2018 and 2019. Also covered is the Chevrolet Malibu but only the 2018 year model.

According to GM, the manufacturer of the brake pistons failed to properly chrome and temper the brake pistons during the manufacturing process. Gas from a defective piston can be released into the vehicle’s brake system, which could make the brakes feel soft, impacting rear-brake performance and increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will drain the brakes to remove gas. Once the gas is out GM says the problem won't happen again. GM is preparing to notify owners, but those with concerns can call dealers and schedule repairs now.

The recall comes just a couple weeks after Fiat Chrysler Automobiles issued a recall of 154,335 SUVs and minivans over the same concerns. The recall includes certain models of 2018-2019 Dodge Grand Caravan and 2018 Journey models, as well as 2018-2019 Jeep Compass and 2019 Cherokee models.

According to several automotive sites, The Truth About Cars among them, the supplier of the brakes in both cases is Germany-based manufacturer ZF Group, which is also looking into the calipers that were provided to Audi, BMW and Volkswagen vehicles for similar issues.

Also affected is German automaker Mercedes-Benz, which has already issued a recall for about 9,000 SUVs, reported The Car Connection y late August.

The recall covers certain 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class and 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, including GLE350 and GLS450 as well as the AMG-tuned GLE43, GLE63, and GLS63 versions.
