Mexican tourism accumulated approximately US$11.6 million in foreign currency by foreign visitors during the first six months of the year. This represents a 4.3% increase compared to the same period last year, according to a report of “Results of the Tourist Activity, made in June 2018 and published by Datatur,” a statistical platform that feeds data generated by the Bank of Mexico and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

The report also showed that from January to June, 20.6 million international tourists arrived in Mexico, 7.3% more than the 19.2 million registered during the same period of 2017.

The tourism sector has been fortified and currently has a better position in the government’s agenda, with the purpose of attracting investment, developing competitive advantages, and generating higher incomes and jobs. These numbers, in fact, indicated that Mexico maintains constant growth in the arrival of international tourists in the economic flow, despite the presence of natural phenomena and external factors.

Furthermore, the World Tourism Organization (WTO) also reported in its UNWTO 2018 Panorama of International Tourism that Mexico rose two places, to occupy sixth place, in the world ranking compared to what registered in 2016. During 2017, a total of 39.3 million tourists were reported, 12% more than the numbers for 2016, and before President Enrique Peña Nieto’s administration, Mexico hadn’t yet reached the WTO’s top 10.
