Mexico City brings in significant economic revenue

During the 2026 World Cup, for which Mexico hosted five matches, the Mexico City government estimated an economic impact of between US$2.5 billion and US$3.76 billion.
The head of the Mexico City government, Clara Brugada, also highlighted that the country recorded the highest number of formal jobs created so far this year, according to IMSS data. Finally, there was a significant increase in the number of tourists and a decentralized economic impact that reached all city districts.
The city received 88,000 flights, as well as 4.4 million visitors and tourists. Additionally, 2,000 public works projects were completed, representing an investment of US$1.3 billion and the creation of 10,756 jobs.
Emilio Ferrer, BBVA’s divisional director of government banking, highlighted the multi-year investments allocated to infrastructure projects and presented an interactive tool to track the World Cup’s economic impact. He explained that there was a 61.2% increase in debit and credit card transactions associated with spending by international tourists, which serves as a reliable indicator of consumer trends.
