Mexico City reports US$125 million in biotechnology

In a collaboration between the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the Tecnologico de Monterrey, the Tlalpan Center was officially inaugurated: a facility in the Tlalpan Innovation District (DiT) where US$125 million will be invested to develop biotechnology and life sciences; with the goal of accelerating applied research, technological development, and attracting high-value-added investments.

The Secretariat of Economic Development (SEDECO) reported that the investment will be directed toward developing capabilities for clinical supplies and establishing a contract laboratory in regenerative medicine and biotechnology, as part of a joint project with Avant Sante.

SEDECO Secretary Manola Zabalza Aldama stated that these projects will enable Mexico to develop the capacity to create innovative medicines that are currently produced abroad; she emphasized that the strategy aims to consolidate a new industry based on knowledge, innovation, and scientific development, which will boost the competitiveness of both the capital and the country.

The opening of Central Tlalpan also has the backing of SEDECO and inCDMX, agencies that seek to position Mexico City as a biopharmaceutical and life sciences hub in Latin America. The combination of new investments, academic collaboration, and technological development lays the groundwork for attracting more strategic projects and strengthening a high-value-added industry that will have an impact on the national economy.
