Mexico, economy & AI

Artificial intelligence is already driving global value chains, technology exports, and investment decisions.
Mexico is not lagging behind in this boom, but the problem is that while the country is gaining ground as a supplier in sectors linked to this technology, domestic adoption continues to lag: exporting technology is not the same as using it.

The opportunities presented by AI technology open a window for the Mexican economy, particularly due to its integration with North America; sectors such as computing and electronics have shown remarkable dynamism in exports, according to a recent analysis by BBVA Research.

“Mexico faces a paradox: it is part of value chains that demand high technological sophistication, but it fails to translate that dynamism into its domestic market; the consequence is an economy that grows through external integration, not internal transformation,” the bank noted.

In an environment where competition is shifting toward intensive use of technology, Mexico’s relative position will depend less on its geographic location and more on its ability to integrate these developments into its economy. Artificial intelligence is already part of the new global production landscape.
