Volkswagen Dominates the Nürburgring with the Golf GTI Edition 50

The Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50 set a new milestone in the compact car segment as the fastest front-wheel-drive production vehicle to lap the Nürburgring’s North Loop (Nordschleife).

The 320-horsepower (hp) commemorative model, with Volkswagen race and test driver Benjamin Leuchter at the wheel, completed the 20.8-kilometer lap in 7:44.523 minutes.

With this new record, the Golf GTI Edition 50 not only reaffirms its exceptional position in the Volkswagen lineup as the most powerful and dynamically precise version, but also establishes itself as the fastest production model in the brand’s history.

The “hot hatch” accelerates from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour (km/h) in 5.3 seconds and has a top speed of 270 km/h. The basic chassis configuration includes a MacPherson front suspension and a four-link rear suspension.

Overall, the anniversary model is 15 millimeters lower than a standard Golf and comes standard with adaptive chassis control (DCC).

The test vehicle is equipped with the optional GTI Performance Edition 50 package, which includes a specially tuned chassis lowered by an additional five millimeters, a lightweight R-Performance exhaust system with titanium rear mufflers, as well as 19-inch forged alloy wheels and Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tires in size 235/35 R19 91Y.

Volkswagen has produced more than 2.5 million GTIs worldwide since its launch in 1976.

The name has been synonymous with driving pleasure, and its formula has remained unchanged across eight generations: powerful performance, precise chassis tuning, the consistent use of front-wheel drive, a sleek and sporty design, and practicality for everyday use.
