Volkswagen will manufacture a new four-cylinder engine at its plant in Silao, Guanajuato, starting 2020, which will contribute to increase production volume at the facility to up to 40%.

Julio Cesar Marin Leal, VW director of environmental management and sustainability in Mexico, said to Periódico AM that, with the new 1.4-liter EA-211 engine, the plant will require expansion work and will need to add new job positions, but he offered no concrete figures.

“We seek to make engines much more efficient; we look for engines that are of lower hydrocarbon consumption. For this reason, we will start making the EA-211 engine from the Silao plant, a smaller, more efficient, high efficiency engine,” he added.

Currently, the Silao plant focuses on producing the EA888 engine, in variants of 1.8 and 2.0 liters. Marin Leal added that, as with the EA888, the EA-211 engines will be used in vehicles that the German automaker manufactures both in Puebla and Chattanooga.
