For second year in a row Kia topped J.D. Power’s Initial Quality Study, a distinction granted to the automaker with the least problems reported by new-car owners in the first 90 days of ownership.
Kia finished with 72 problems per 100 vehicles, while another South Korean make – Genesis, which is Hyundai’s new luxury brand and is ranked for the first time – came in second with 77 problems per 100.Â
The Kia Forte, built in Pesqueria, Nuevo Leon, was recognized with the best initial quality in the compact car segment, outperforming models such as the Chevrolet Cruze, the Toyota Corolla and the Volkswagen Jetta.
The influential study, released at an Automotive Press Association meeting in Detroit, assigns scores determined by the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles. It frequently is consulted by new-cars shoppers.
New-car quality reached its highest level in the study’s 31-year history, with owners of 2017 vehicles experiencing fewer problems with audio, communication, entertainment and navigation gadgetry than a year ago.
J.D. Power says 27 of 33 brands improved quality from a year ago. The study surveyed more than 77,000 people who bought or leased 2017 model-year vehicles. The lower the score, the higher the vehicle quality.
