Mexican Automotive Production Increases Prior to Tariffs

During the month prior to the entry into force of the tariffs imposed by the United States on imported vehicles, the Mexican automotive industry produced 338,669 cars and light trucks, a volume 12.1% higher than in March 2024.
According to the most recent data from Inegi, the total production figure for the first quarter was 973,485 light vehicles, or 4.8% more compared to the same period last year.
Also during March, exports grew by 4%, totaling 296,964 units, while the total for the first quarter was 775,866 vehicles, representing a 6% decline compared to the first three months of 2024.
At a press conference, the president of the Mexican Automotive Industry Association, Rogelio Garza, said that in view of the proximity of the implementation of tariffs, some companies decided to pause shipments abroad in advance.
“What has happened is that some brands have decided not to ship vehicles while the tariffs are being implemented, this has happened and we will still have to wait,” said the executive.
