GM and the Silao Plant Union Reach Wage Agreement

The union representing workers at the General Motors plant in Silao, Guanajuato, has reached a preliminary agreement with the company regarding the 2026–2028 contract renegotiation, which includes a 15% across-the-board wage increase retroactive to March 25.
This is the best agreement reached “in any contract negotiation in the automotive industry in Mexico to date,” said Alejandra Morales, general secretary of the Independent Union of Automotive Industry Workers (Sinttia), in statements to the national press.
The proposal includes a 10% wage increase, plus an additional 1% in October and another 1% for certain categories in December.
The union also secured increases in benefits and other perks such as free transportation, an increase in the savings fund, bonuses, and social benefits, as well as “fairer working conditions,” which were not specified.
Among the agreed-upon adjustments, according to reports, are an increase in grocery vouchers effective July 1 and another increase in the Sunday premium, as well as paternity leave and a “leveling bonus” for workers with 18 years of service, regardless of their category.
The agreement will be put to a vote among the 7,000 unionized workers tentatively on April 9 and 10. If the proposal is rejected, the union would call for a strike on the 15th of the same month.
