Only 27% of educational institutes have adopted AI

In Mexico, only 27% of higher education institutions (HEIs) have regulations, ethical principles, guidelines, appendices, or current updates regarding artificial intelligence (AI), while 87% still lack mechanisms to evaluate its use in the classroom.

A study conducted by the Interinstitutional Observatory on Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education in Mexico revealed that 161 HEIs from 31 states responded to a closed-ended questionnaire consisting of nine sections and 118 items to investigate how intelligent automation is integrated.

65% of the institutions have not developed strategies to understand how students use AI in their academic activities, and only 37% have defined specific guidelines in this area. On the other hand, 75% of the participating HEIs do not have licenses to use intelligent system resources or applications to support teaching practices, 68% do not collaborate with their peers at the national level in this area, and only 10% have integrated AI-based management models into educational administration.

The study indicates that 50% of higher education institutions offer continuing education courses to external audiences focused on the analysis or application of AI, and 37% have a professional development plan in this branch of computer science aimed at academic staff.
