Clautmet exhibits greater potential for electromobility
The Metropolitan Automotive Cluster (Clautmet), which includes Mexico City, State of Mexico and Hidalgo, has become the region with the greatest potential for the development of electromobility in Mexico, due to its market size, production capacity, and supplier ecosystem, said Antonio Hernández, director of marketing at Mundi.
The first opportunity lies in after-sales service, since nearly 40% of the electric vehicles sold since 2018 are typically on the road in the area; “we need to sell them service, diagnostics, and battery replacement and disposal.” Adding to this, residential and fleet charging infrastructure, insurance, and financing to purchase a vehicle.
The second opportunity lies in the heavy-duty vehicle segment: “Clautmet has a unique ecosystem in terms of manufacturing electric buses, such as the Taruk, which is produced in Ciudad Sahagún.”
According to the executive, the most significant opportunity lies in local supply, given that “67% of electric vehicle production is supplied from the Bajío region and the north, and there are no local suppliers in the metropolitan area; there are literally zero suppliers of power electronics, high-voltage harnesses, thermal management systems, and fuel cells; there is one factory, but it is clearly not enough.”
He noted that this area is where the cluster can have the greatest impact in developing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the electrical sector and suppliers that add value; to advance electromobility, an ecosystem that includes specialized components, maintenance services, trained personnel, and charging infrastructure is needed.
