Bajío Leads Mexico’s Paints and Coatings Market
The Bajío region, led by Guanajuato and Querétaro, accounted for 25.3% of Mexico’s paint and coatings market in 2025, with an estimated compound annual growth rate of 5.6% through 2031, according to Ruth Rodríguez Virueña, executive director of the Mexican Association of Surface Finishing Manufacturers (AMAS).
The region is considered one of the manufacturing hubs with the greatest growth potential in the industry, driven by its concentration of sectors such as automotive, aerospace, metalworking, and electronics, which require solutions ranging from liquid and powder coatings to specialized surface treatments.
“Guanajuato and Querétaro stand out in the Bajío region, accounting for approximately 25.3% of the national paint and coatings market in 2025. This market is also projected to grow at an annual rate of 5.62% through 2031. The region is home to industries such as automotive, aerospace, metalworking, electronics, and advanced manufacturing, which increasingly demand specialized solutions, ranging from liquid and powder coatings to functional treatments that enhance surface properties,” he said, citing industry reports.
These trends, he added, indicate that growth opportunities in the industry must be accompanied by greater technical expertise, innovation, and adaptability.
Regarding global projections, Rodríguez said the coating equipment market is expected to grow at an annual rate of 5.8% through 2031, amid increasing demand for automation and production line modernization.
Meanwhile, the Mexican industrial coatings market is projected to reach approximately US$990 million, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.1% through 2030.
The domestic market for surface treatment chemicals, meanwhile, is expected to reach US$626 million in 2026, with projected annual growth of approximately 5.3% through 2030. This segment includes products used in cleaning, surface preparation, electroplating, anodizing, passivation, and conversion coating processes, all of which are essential for improving the protection, durability, and performance of industrial components.
