Italian Companies Maintain Confidence in Mexico
Italian companies remain confident about investing in Mexico despite uncertainty surrounding the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Italy maintains a favorable outlook on Mexico thanks to its skilled workforce, competitive costs, and access to international markets, according to Alessandro Modiano, Italy’s ambassador to Mexico.
“Mexico is seen as a country that still has very, very bright prospects, a view that is further reinforced by this modernized agreement with Europe,” the ambassador said.
He emphasized that Mexico continues to offer advantages for Italian companies interested in manufacturing and exporting from the country, particularly to North America.
“The main advantage is access to major markets, the skilled workforce in Mexico—which is clearly less expensive than in Europe or other parts of the world—and a whole range of other factors that make Mexico an extremely important hub,” he said.
Modiano highlighted the automotive and food sectors as areas with a significant Italian presence in Mexico, supported by trade and investment ties. However, he noted that the energy sector faces a challenging environment, prompting some investors to adopt a more cautious approach.
The ambassador expects economic ties between the two countries to strengthen over the medium and long term, supported by the modernization of the trade agreement between Mexico and the European Union.
In mid-October, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and U.S. President Donald Trump announced that negotiations on the USMCA were nearing completion.
Although details of the negotiations remain unavailable, the United States is seeking to reduce its trade deficit, while Mexico aims to lower existing tariffs and prevent the introduction of new ones.
