“Housing for Well-Being” is 33.6% complete

As part of the “Housing for Well-being” program, the goal of building 1.8 million homes has reached 33.6% completion, benefiting 2.1 million people, according to Edna Vega, head of the Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial, and Urban Development (SEDATU).

Regarding housing improvements, she noted that 579,000 loans and grants have been awarded to benefit two million people; meanwhile, to provide legal certainty, 293,000 deeds or certificates of settlement have been issued.

During the morning press conference at the National Palace, President Sheinbaum emphasized that there had never been a program focused on those earning between 1 and 2 minimum wages—the country’s lowest-income workers. Today, housing is also accessible to construction workers and to women who earn minimum wage and pay very high rents, she added.

She emphasized that this program also helps the economy, as each home represents the work of an average of four people. She explained that the construction industry is an engine of the economy.

For his part, the director general of the National Workers’ Housing Fund Institute (INFONAVIT), Octavio Romero, noted that at the start of the current administration, there were 4,856,000 unpayable loans. These are cases in which, even though the beneficiaries were making their payments, the debts continued to rise.

He explained that 4,399,000 loans have already been restructured, and 457,000 have already been settled.
