Mexico, the US’ leading automotive supplier

Data from the US Census Bureau for March 2026 show that Mexico remains the largest automotive supplier to the United States among all countries analyzed, far surpassing economies such as Japan, Canada, South Korea, and Germany.
In March 2026 alone, US automotive imports from Mexico reached a value of US$15 billion, equivalent to nearly 40% of the total value of vehicles and auto parts imported by the United States during that month. The cumulative total for the first quarter reached US$38 billion, confirming the strategic importance of Mexican manufacturing within the North American automotive industry.
Mexico’s leadership is explained by the breadth of its manufacturing platform. Unlike other countries with a strong specialization in light vehicles or specific components, Mexico participates in virtually all segments of the sector: passenger vehicles, pickups, commercial vehicles, and auto parts.
Mexico’s performance is not solely due to competitive costs. The real advantage lies in the deep productive integration developed under the USMCA and decades of foreign investment in the automotive sector.
Mexico has strengthened its position thanks to factors such as its geographic proximity to the United States, installed capacity in advanced manufacturing, a broad network of Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers, specialization in automotive production, growing participation in electromobility and batteries, as well as a highly skilled technical workforce.
