Port of Manzanillo beats record for cargo volume

The Port of Manzanillo recorded a 2.9% increase in container cargo volume compared to last year; its various terminals handled more than one million TEUs—specifically 1,007,594—a record figure for a first quarter at Mexican ports.


The monthly report on operational results from the National Port System Administration (ASIPONA) in Manzanillo indicates that, from January to March, 45% of total containerized cargo consisted of exports, with a 9.1% increase, while imports accounted for 41%, representing a 1.1% decrease. As for the transshipment of goods from one ship to another, it accounted for 14%, a decrease of 3.9%.


Container boxes accounted for three-quarters of the total commercial cargo in Manzanillo. Meanwhile, mineral bulk transport—including products such as iron pellets, copper concentrate, and urea for fertilizers—accounted for 14%.


Agricultural bulk cargo, mainly soybeans, oat seeds, wheat, and barley, accounted for 7% of the total; and general cargo accounted for 4%, including goods such as machinery, steel products and derivatives, super-sized bags of mineral fertilizer, and tractor-trailers.
