Rivian to arrive in Mexico by 2021, CEO says

MEXICO — The first stores of the new vehicle brand called Rivian, which wants to compete within the electric car market against Tesla and Land Rover, will arrive in Mexico by 2021.

“For Mexico, we are looking into launch dates, but we are planning for 2021, maybe even before that,” revealed in an interview with El Financiero, RJ Scaringe, Rivian’s CEO.

The Illinois-based automaker presented in November 2018 its first two products, an SUV and a pick-up. And, at the moment, Rivian is receiving orders from the United States, Canada and Mexico through its e-commerce platform.

“We are looking into the production of 50,000 vehicles of these two products in the short term, and later on we could integrate other [vehicles] that provide the experience at lower cost, so as to have a total of six vehicles,” explained Scaringe when interviewed in the framework of the Auto New York Show 2019.

According to data from the Instituto Nacional de Estadistica y Geografia (INEGI), in 2018, 17,807 hybrid and electric cars were sold in Mexico, which represented an increase of 68.7% when compared to the 10,554 units sold in 2017.
