US$1.6 billion ammonia plant in Sinaloa: Set to begin operations

Construction of the Gas y Petroquimica de Occidente (GPO) ammonia plant in Sinaloa is currently 88% complete, and the company expects it to begin operations by 2027.
With an investment of US$1.6 billion, the facility will produce 2,200 metric tons of anhydrous ammonia, with the goal of reducing dependence on imported fertilizers. The project will also generate 10,000 direct and indirect jobs and involves 7,000 suppliers, transporters, and local businesses.
Another key aspect of the project is vocational training for women.
In collaboration with the Sinaloa State Institute for Vocational Training (ICATSIN), GPO has enrolled 2,885 women, who have received training in welding and electrical work.
Currently, the company estimates an additional investment of US$86,000, with a total of US$456,000 projected by early 2027.
