Chihuahua Sees a Decade of Decline in Industrial Activity

Industrial activity in the state of Chihuahua has declined by 2.9% year-over-year, according to the results of the Monthly Industrial Activity Indicator by State (IMAIEF). Mining was the only sector that showed positive growth, at 7.8%, between two of the periods studied.

In stark contrast to the electricity generation, transmission, and distribution sectors, the construction and manufacturing industries posted annual declines of 6.8%, 8.9%, and 1.3%, respectively.

However, according to the report, the annual mining growth rate showed even greater increases in other states such as Mexico, Yucatán, Veracruz, Chiapas, Hidalgo, and San Luis Potosí, with figures for the same period that were on par with those of Chihuahua.

Meanwhile, in the electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and retail sectors, as well as in the supply of water and natural gas via pipelines to end consumers, the states that made notable progress were Nayarit, Querétaro, Yucatán, Oaxaca, Baja California, Hidalgo, Veracruz, and Campeche.

Meanwhile, the construction sector saw its largest increases in Tlaxcala, Hidalgo, the State of Mexico, Guerrero, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Puebla, and Colima. In terms of manufacturing industries, Tabasco has seen the most significant growth, followed by Oaxaca, San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo, and Colima.

The IMAIEF's data has made it possible to monitor short-term trends in industrial activity across the states, as well as to provide insights for analyzing the performance of key sectors at the state level.
