General Motors took advantage of U.S. appetite for bigger models to displace Nissan as Mexico's largest automotive exporter, official data shows.
From January to May, GM exported 240,281 vehicles, a 18.7% growth compared to the same period of 2016. Its Japanese rival, the biggest exporter in 2016, shipped overseas 210,669 units, a 6.2% fall over the same period.
GM is one of the few automakers that does not limit its Mexican output to compact cars. Contrary to Nissan, which makes mostly Sentras and Versas for retail markets overseas, the Detroit company builds in Mexico pickup trucks, SUVs and compact crossovers which nowadays have greater demand.
