Leoni AG, a Germany-based manufacturer of cable, harnesses and wiring systems, in recent days broke ground to build its second plant in Yucatan, Mexico, less than six months after the company officially started operations of its first facility in the state, fifth in Mexico overall.

The new 40,000 square-meter site will imply a US$ 37.5 million investment, US$ 20 million to build the facility and US$ 15 million for equipment. The company plans to open 2,000 job positions in a two-year period.

The site will be built under a sustainability model that includes the use of solar panels and wastewater treatment sources.

“Although we have just started the first factory, we have had good signs and results that have made it very easy to make the decision to install here the second,” said Jose Conceicao, regional manager of the company.

The plant is scheduled to become at least partially operational by the first quarter of 2019. Leoni operates five facilities in Mexico located in the states of Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Guanajuato and Yucatan.
